Electronic Publishing
Electronic publishing is the transformation of a physical product into a digital support, in a variety of formats which can be used in different ways.
Digital formatting also makes it possible to create an interface with the user, or to add multimedia content (audio/video/photo), supplementary information (websites, additional text, cross-referencing to notes or other digital files), to create notes or comments, and to search the file for information.
The most widely-used digital format is EPUB, the standard format for E-books.
One of the main advantages of E-book readers is that they are legible in any light conditions, and offer standard layouts and characters as well as the standard functions.
The most popular E-book readers are the Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader and the Italian Biblet. These are based on E-ink technology, which gives the sensation of a printed black and white page, but on a high-contrast and thus perfectly legible display with extremely low power consumption.
One of the latest digital formats is the PDF, which can be rendered interactive and provide supplementary information (links to other PDFs, integrated videos, 3D rendering, links to websites). This format is currently used for a number of E-book readers with colour screens and Tablets.
